The West Bengal Chapter of Plastic Surgeons recently held a workshop on Gender Affirmation Surgeries (sex change) at Apollo Gleneagles Hospital, Kolkata. Dr. Richie Gupta, Director and HOD, Department of Plastic, Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgery and Dr. Rajat Gupta, Senior Consultant, Plastic, Cosmetic & Reconstructive Surgery at Fortis Hospital, Shalimar Bagh were invited to this event as speakers.

Dr. Richie Gupta opened the session with a talk on “Introduction to Transsexualism and its Management’. This was followed by a short lecture on “Mental Health Aspects in Gender Affirmation” by Dr. Ujjaini Srimani, a local psychiatrist. In addition, a talk on “Gender Incongruence – Endocrine Perspectives” by Dr. Anirban Majumder, a local faculty was also organized. The highlight of the workshop was an informative and interactive panel discussion where the participants, Dr. Richie Gupta, Dr. Ujjaini Srimani, Dr. Anirban Majumder and Mr Kaushik Gupta, an advocate, shared their perspectives on surgical interventions around gender affirmation and related issues around its management in the Indian context. At the workshop, Dr Richie Gupta also spoke on ‘Surgical management of transsexualism’ which was followed by two video presentations on “Phalloplasty’ by Dr Richie Gupta and ‘Feminizing Genitoplasty’ by Dr. Rajat Gupta.

Dr Richie Gupta, Director and HOD, Department of Plastic, Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgery at Fortis Hospital, Shalimar Bagh shared, “The field of gender affirmation surgery has undergone many developments over the past few years. An endless series of questions were directed at us from the audience and we had a good experience interacting with participants about new treatment options, benefits and challenges in the area of gender affirmation surgeries. We had an opportunity to present many modifications and refinements in existing surgical techniques, which were appreciated by the local faculty”.

Mr. Mahipal Singh Bhanot, Facility Director, Fortis Hospital, Shalimar Bagh shared that, “It is a matter of pride that our doctors from Plastic, Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgeries are being invited to prestigious events across India to discuss this subject.  The workshop was well attended and highly appreciated by the audience comprising of surgeons, health professionals and experts from all over India from related fields.”
