  1. Irrigating the nasal cavities with saline or using the saline nasal spray reduces postnasal drainage, removes secretions, and rinses away allergens and irritants.
  2. Saline irrigations or saline nasal spray should be used immediately prior to administration of other intranasal medications, so that the mucosa is freshly cleansed when the medications are introduced.
  3. Systematic reviews of studies employing various forms of saline sprays and irrigation (performed one to four times daily) has found that nasal saline is an effective adjunctive treatment for Chronic rhinosinusitis.
  4. Saline nasal sprays may help nasal symptoms of the common cold.
  5. Saline nasal irrigation for acute upper respiratory infections has symptomatic benefits.
  6. Patients who report dry nasal passages should use saline nasal sprays before bed instead of humidifying the entire bedroom.
  7. In pregnant women, nasal saline irrigation is beneficial for treatment of allergic rhinitis.
  8. Nasal saline sprays and irrigations, and oral antihistamines are useful in non-allergic rhinitis.
