New Delhi, April 22, 2020 :

When the lockdown is lifted and India opens its borders for national and international travelers, the government needs to prepare themselves against the relapse of COIVD-19 cases. Further spread of the pandemic could severely burden the healthcare infrastructure of the country and cause further damage to the economy.

However, the government has imposed strict restrictions pertaining to social distancing and compulsory use of face masks. There are some essential actions/precautions that need to be made compulsory by the government as travel guidelines.

While every passenger must ensure hand hygiene precautions, carry necessary protective gears including masks and gloves, all entry and exit gates must have sanitizers installed

Additionally, it is imperative that they go through a simple process of checking body temperature and are handed over “Instant COVID Test Kits” at the airports and railways stations. Cost for these kits will be charged from the travelers. These rapid antibody Instant COVID Test Kits help examine whether a person has developed antibodies in his or her blood stream to fight the SARS-CoV-2, which indicates whether a person has been exposed to or has covid-19. The results of these tests take around 25- 30 minutes. If the persons test positive, they must be quarantined.  Countries like China and South Koreas are producing these kits in bulk everyday and are ready to export.

General rules for personal hygiene, cough etiquette and keeping a distance of at least one metre from persons showing symptoms remain particularly important for all travellers. These include:

  • Perform hand hygiene frequently, particularly after contact with respiratory secretions. Hand hygiene includes either cleaning hands with soap and water or with an alcohol-based hand rub. Alcohol-based hand rubs are preferred if hands are not visibly soiled; wash hands with soap and water when they are visibly soiled
  • Cover your nose and mouth with a flexed elbow or paper tissue when coughing or sneezing and disposing immediately of the tissue and performing hand hygiene
  • Refrain from touching mouth and nose
  • Cover your mouth with a mask
