New Delhi, November 22, 2020 :

Diabetes is a chronic disease affecting millions of people all over the world. Diabetes knows no boundaries of cast, creed or nationalities – its causing immense health issues and mental trauma to persons irrespective of their social or material status. Type 2 Diabetes is the most prevalent as approximately 95 percent of all Diabetics in the world are suffering from Type 2 Diabetes. Traditionally, Type 2 Diabetes has been considered as a chronic progressive disease, with no definite cure or treatment and it can only be managed and controlled. But some recent studies have highlighted that the process of Diabetes may be reversed and known Diabetics could go off medications and remain controlled for an unknown period.

In fact, this had been noted earlier also when newly diagnosed diabetic patients were given intensive insulin therapy and it was observed that they could remain treatment free for few years. These results have caused a furor and again diverted the attention of scientific community to finding a solution to this problem and in the meantime many commercial ventures have sprung up which are offering complete cure of Diabetes by even stopping of Insulin.

This has caused a frenzy among Diabetics seeking to get rid of their medications and injections as large number of questions crops up here that, Is it really possible to reverse the process of Diabetes or Can we Stop the failing of pancreas, or Can we get them to start producing Insulin again, Is it really possible to reverse the damage to the organs that has already taken place, and does this reversal also affect the other changes observed in Diabetes like unfavorable Lipid Profile, Fatty Liver and early accelerated Atherosclerosis to name a few.

Even though the basics of Diabetes remain same, however, lot of new developments have come to the rescue the diabetic patients. Newer agents have been introduced for management of Diabetes which decreases the serious Cardiovascular & Renal complications which are the reason for early mortality and significant burden of morbidity in Diabetics. Innovative technology advancements and interventions in monitoring of Blood Glucose levels and Drug delivery systems have also contributed significantly to better management of Diabetes.

To discuss different aspects of Diabetes reversal and the challenges faced in management of Diabetes by patients in the current scenario especially during COVID 19 times, ASSOCHAM is organizing a webinar on Illness to Wellness – Diabetes Reversal “Myth or Reality” on Friday, 27th November, 2020 from 11.00 am to 12.00 pm.
