New Delhi, November 29, 2020 :

With a view to promote preventive healthcare management, ASSOCHAM has recently organized series of webinars under its Illness to Wellness campaign where renowned experts from various fields shared their respective views/expertise on various issues including health, hygiene, and well-being of people.

In the light of ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, there is an urgent need to sensitise people on voluntary blood donation which can help save many precious lives in emergencies and patients who suffer blood disorder diseases like Thalassemia, a genetic blood disorder which leads to increased destruction (haemolysis) of the red cells. Thalassemia patients suffer from haemoglobin deficiency, which causes severe anaemia. This is an inherited blood disorder, in which both parents must carry the defective gene in order to pass on thalassemia major to the child.

In India, thalassemia is considered a disability under RPWD Act 2016. This act enables people with thalassemia to avail disability benefits.

In a country of 1.3 billion people, 2 million thalassemics and many others with disabilities are struggling for survival amidst Covid-19. Blood donation and transfusion are crucial and essential services especially for thalassemics. Disruption of life saving procedure like blood transfusion is one of the key issues. From availability of blood in blood banks to availability of transportation and transfusion facilities, there are multiple challenges being faced by these patients in the wake of this pandemic.

Organizations like TPAG/IRCS/ Rotary and hospitals treating these patients are working day and night to ensure that blood availability and supply for these and others in need is uninterrupted and well-being of patients is maintained. The government, on its part has also actively been taking steps to ensure they are not left out amidst this pandemic.

In view of the above, ASSOCHAM is organizing a webinar on “Importance of Blood Donation & Managing Wellness of People with Thalassemia,” on the occasion of World Disability Day on Thursday, 3rd December, 2020 at 11.00 AM to 12.30 PM to spread awareness about the need for Voluntary Blood Donation and support for Thalassemia Patients.
