New Delhi, May 21, 2022:

While managing the grief of losing their precious seven year old daughter Neelam, her parents decided to give the ultimate gift of life by donating her liver and kidney. Neelam was declared brain dead due to a critical injury. Her liver was transplanted into a 6 year old Arnav, from Lucknow, in a lifesaving organ transplant procedure at Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals.

According to Dr Anupam Sibal, Group Medical Director, Senior Pediatric Gastroenterologist, Apollo Hospitals Group, “Arnav had been suffering from Langerhans giant cell hemophagocytosis (LCH). LCH is a rare disorder that can affect the functioning of multiple organs including the bone marrow and liver. In the liver, sclerosing cholangitis can develop resulting in fibrosis and cirrhosis leading to chronic liver failure. Arnav had undergone chemotherapy and was under remission. He needed an urgent liver transplant.  The team is delighted to see Arnav bounce back to his happy healthy self after his liver transplant like he was before the diagnosis of LCH was made”.

Dr Neerav Goyal, Senior Consultant Liver Transplant, Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, said, “Arnav’s family did not have a suitable donor due to medical issues. Fortunately, NOTTO notified the hospital of availability of a cadaveric liver of a 7 year old child in Delhi. Arnav was brought to Delhi from Lucknow via road within 5 hours, with through the help of the Police authorities and cooperation of NHAI as a liver had become available. We started the Liver Transplant at 10 pm and the organ implantation started at 2 am. The Transplant ended around 8 am. The patient’s post-operative recovery was uneventful and he has been discharged from the hospital”.

Care was performed under the supervision of Dr Neerav Goyal, Senior Consultant, Liver Transplant, Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, Dr Anupam Sibal, Group Medical Director, Senior Pediatric Gastroenterologist, Apollo Hospitals Group, Dr Arun V, Dr Varun M, Dr Pradeep Kumar (Consultants, Liver Transplant) and Dr Raman R (Anaesthetist), Dr Smita Malhotra and Dr Karunesh Kumar (Consultants, Paediatric Gastroenterology).
