Instructs officials to improve water quality and increase water production

Delhi Jal Board Vice Chairman, Saurabh Bhardwaj visited Sonia Vihar Water Treatment Plant (WTP) in North-East Delhi with an objective to improve water supply and water quality in Delhi. During the visit, the DJB Vice Chairman inspected various sections of Sonia Vihar Water Treatment Plant and directed the officials to improve the quality of water and also raise the production of water. During the visit, Sanjay Sharma (Director for Treatment and Quality Control, Delhi Jal Board), Ankit Srivastava (Hydraulics Consultant), Arun Sharma (Chief Water Analyst), Dinesh Yadav (Executive Engineer), Harish Kataria (Manager of Sonia Vihar WTP) and Divyanshu (CEO, Nalanda) were also present.
Delhi Jal Board Vice Chairman Saurabh Bhardwaj inspected 51 tube-wells built at Sonia Vihar Water Treatment Plant. The total capacity of these 51 tube-wells is 5.57 MGD, but at present only 29 tube-wells are functional or producing water. Saurabh Bhardwaj asked the officials the reason for the non-functioning of the rest of the tube-wells. Sanjay Sharma, Director for Treatment and Quality Control, Delhi Jal Board, informed Saurabh Bhardwaj that due to increase in the amount of chemical elements such as iron and ammonia in the water coming out of the closed tube wells, they had to be shut for some time. He said that efforts are already underway to improve the water quality of all the non-functional tube wells and all the tube-wells will be functional as soon as water quality improves.
The Director for Treatment and Quality Control also said that the Engineering Branch of DJB had given permission to run the non-functional tube-wells once the iron content was less than 5 and the harmful substances content was found less than 15. He said that later all the tube-wells were allowed to function after proper cleaning.
The Director of Treatment and Quality Control also suggested that proper and regular cleaning of the tube-wells can reduce the pollutants in water. Hydraulics Consultant Ankit Srivastava also agreed to this suggestion. The water production at Sonia Vihar Water Treatment Plant can be increased by running all the tube-wells at their full capacity. Saurabh Bhardwaj directed the DJB officials to take all possible steps to increase the production of water.
During the inspection, DJB Vice Chairman Saurabh Bhardwaj wanted to know the latest level of pollutants in the water at Sonia Vihar WTP. On the instructions of Saurabh Bhardwaj, water samples were collected and he instructed the officials to submit the quality report in 7 days. Saurabh Bhardwaj also wanted to know how much the capacity of the tube wells has decreased and what is their actual capacity? The DJB Vice Chairman asked for suggestions from the officials for reducing the level of harmful elements in the water. He also instructed them to prepare a presentation in 7 days about an action plan on how to reduce the harmful elements in the tube-well water.
DJB Vice Chairman Saurabh Bhardwaj said that constant monitoring of water is essential to ascertain the quality of water. He also told officials that a comprehensive mechanism or system should be in place for real time monitoring of water. Saurabh Bhardwaj said that such a holistic system should be prepared which could ascertain the number of tube-wells functioning in a real time, number of tube-wells that are non-functional and the quality of water that is being produced from these tube-wells. This kind of real time information could be shared online through a system. Saurabh Bhardwaj also instructed Sanjay Sharma, Director for Treatment and Quality Control, DJB, to prepare an action plan along with a presentation in 7 days.
