The success of this heart transplant was made possible through the timely allocation of organs from Bai Jerbai Wadia Hospital for children Mumbai. The National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (NOTTO) played a crucial role in coordinating the allocation process, ensuring ethical and transparent procedures.
The patient, was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy (disease of the heart muscle that makes it harder for the heart to pump blood to the rest of the body thereby leading to severe heart failure. A special device named Berlin Heart (total artificial heart) was implanted on July 29th to improve her condition. The patient has shown good recovery, however, she had another stroke few weeks ago. She is also the only child in India to survive with Berlin heart. The team has been dedicatedly trying to find a matching heart for her since March through NOTTO.
Recognizing the urgent need to save a life, Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals requested NOTTO officials to allocate the heart to the deserving 2-year-old patient in the month of March. The National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (NOTTO) informed about the availability of the organ. Recognizing the urgent need for a heart transplant after a significant waiting period, Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals promptly requested heart allocation for the 2-year-old patient. To ensure a smooth and efficient process, Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals collaborated closely with Bai Jerbai Wadia Hospital for Children in Mumbai. The heart was successfully retrieved, and with the support of the Mumbai Traffic Police, a green corridor was established to expedite the transportation process.

The collaborative efforts of our medical professionals and entire surgical and anaesthesia team have demonstrated the true power of teamwork and dedication to patient care. As a surgeon, leading the journey of the youngest child in India through cardiomyopathy and end-stage heart failure has been an emotional and rewarding experience for me. Admitted for six months, she battled intractable cardiogenic shock and septicaemia. Our team’s dedication became evident when, on 29/7, we implanted the Berlin Heart, marking a historic moment as she became the second child ever in India to receive this life-saving device. Registered with NOTTO since March for a heart transplant, she is now the only child in India to survive with a Berlin Heart and undergo a successful heart transplant. This achievement is a collective triumph, showcasing the spirit of perseverance in pediatric cardiac care, and I am grateful to be part of a team that made this possible”
