A 29-year-old woman with a severe post-burn deformity of the left chest and breast, resulting from a childhood burn injury, has successfully undergone very complex reconstructive plastic surgery at Apollo Spectra Hospital, Delhi.
The patient sustained flame burn injuries at the age of five. The injury led to severe tightness on the left side of her chest. As she grew, the impacted breast did not develop properly, while the other breast developed normally, creating a noticeable difference in size and shape. This led to a significant, visible imbalance in her body, along with breast asymmetry, tightness of the chest wall and restricted shoulder movement.
In addition to the physical deformity, the condition affected her body image and quality of life over several years.
The case was very challenging since the burn injury has happened during childhood and had impacted the development of breast over many years. Speaking about the case, Dr Raman Sharma, Plastic & Cosmetic Surgeon, Apollo Spectra Hospital, Delhi, said, “This was not a simple cosmetic-related concern. The patient had an old burn injury that led to tight scarring, breast-related deformity and even restricted movement. We planned the treatment in two stages. In the first stage we released the tight scar tissue and also removed unhealthy scar tissue, followed by grafting of skin in order to create a healthy surface. Once healing was complete, the second stage was performed, during which nearly 250ml of fat was taken from thigh of patients and transferred to the impacted breast in order to improve volume, shape and symmetry with the opposite breast.
The patient recovered well after the entire procedure and was discharged in a well stable condition. Now, she is leading a confident life. Dr Raman Sharma also said that the case even highlights the importance of timely medical treatment for all burn-related deformities. Untreated post-burn contractures and scars, particularly in children, can interfere with normal growth, physical function and psychosocial well-being.
