Noida/New Delhi, October 28, 2026:

As families observe Karwa Chauth, a festival associated with prayers for a partner’s health and longevity, a young couple’s journey from an unexpected medical emergency to parenthood highlights the importance of timely care and mutual support. A 25-year-old stroke survivor recently delivered a healthy baby boy at Fortis Hospital Noida following medical supervision during a high-risk pregnancy.

Her medical journey began years earlier, shortly before her wedding, when she developed sudden blurred vision in her right eye. She was brought to Fortis Hospital Noida within two hours of the onset of symptoms. Evaluation confirmed an acute ischemic stroke, which occurs when a blood clot obstructs blood flow to part of the brain. Following assessment, the neurology team, led by Dr. Jyoti Bala Sharma, Director, Neurology, Fortis Hospital Noida, administered thrombolysis, a clot-dissolving treatment, within the eligible treatment window.

With their wedding approaching, the unexpected diagnosis left the patient and her fiancé anxious about her recovery and their future together. The treating team counselled the couple about her condition and response to treatment. Her condition improved, and she was discharged in stable condition within a week. The couple subsequently went ahead with their wedding, supporting each other through her recovery.

Years into their marriage, the couple prepared to welcome their first child. Her history of stroke, along with gestational diabetes and hypothyroidism, made the pregnancy high-risk and required careful medical supervision. Gestational diabetes involves elevated blood sugar levels during pregnancy, while hypothyroidism occurs when the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormones.

Throughout her pregnancy, she underwent regular medical reviews and monitoring to manage these conditions. She subsequently delivered a healthy baby boy weighing 3.7 kg at Fortis Hospital Noida.

Dr. Jyoti Bala Sharma, Director, Neurology, Fortis Hospital Noida, said, “Stroke can occur in young adults, and sudden changes in vision should not be ignored. In this patient’s case, early arrival enabled assessment and clot-dissolving treatment within the eligible treatment window. For women with a history of stroke who are planning a pregnancy, individual assessment and continued medical follow-up are important. The risks and care requirements differ from patient to patient.”

Mohit Singh, Zonal Director, Fortis Hospital Noida, said, “Occasions such as Karwa Chauth bring a family’s hopes for health and togetherness into focus. This patient’s journey highlights the importance of family support, clear medical counselling and continuity of care as people navigate significant health concerns and life decisions.”

As Karwa Chauth draws attention to the wellbeing of loved ones, the case reinforces the importance of recognising sudden neurological symptoms, seeking immediate medical attention and obtaining appropriate medical guidance when planning pregnancy after a stroke.
