Jaypee Hospital achieves another milestone, performs 200 successful kidney transplants
  • Out of 200 transplants performed, 65.5% are female
  • 22.5% international patients have undergone kidney transplants at the hospital
  • 82% transplants are male recipients

Noida, November 16, 2017Jaypee Hospital, a Multi Super Specialty Hospital in Sector 128 Noida, has achieved another milestone in performing 200 successful kidney transplants. The hospital, which was established in 2014 and started performing the kidney transplants in May 2015, has successfully completed 200 kindly transplants in a span of just 29 Months.

In most cases, women have come forward to donate their kidney to their family members. Out of the 200 transplants performed, 131 were female donors. Whereas, 82% of the recipients are men (164 male recipients out of 200 transplants performed at the hospital.)

Speaking on this occasion, Dr. Manoj Luthra, CEO, Jaypee Hospital said, “I congratulate the team of doctors from the Nephrology and Urology departments, whose great efforts and skills have brought about this achievement. This is a moment of great pride for us that our hospital has been able to contribute to this cause. Over the past three years, we have successfully treated more than 4 lakh patients in different specialties and we feel honored that people have shown faith in us and our services.”

On the occasion, Dr. Amit Devra, Senior Consultant and Coordinator, Urology and Kidney Transplant Department, Jaypee Hospital said,“During this journey of 200 transplant cases, we have done many challenging cases with remarkably success rate. In one case, the patient had already undergone two transplants before in other hospitals but with time the transplanted kidneys had stopped functioning and the patient was in critical condition. His wife also had an unmatched blood group making it difficult for her to donate the organ, but we decided to proceed. The recipient underwent plasma exchange to remove preformed antibodies in his body. The old graft was removed and we transplanted a new graft on that site.”

“In 4 cases, the patients had severe cardiac diseases and were required to undergo coronary artery bypass surgery. We performed the transplant after the bypass surgeries. Such transplants are complex to perform as these patients are generally on blood thinners and thus have a high risk of bleeding. We have also performed unmatched blood group kidney transplants and till date have successfully done 23 such cases. Families who cannot afford unmatched transplant, can also opt for swap transplants where two families agree to exchange their donors with each other,” Dr. Devra further added.

Dr. Anil Prasad Bhatt, Senior Consultant, Nephrology, Jaypee Hospital said, “When a kidney operates at only 10% of its capacity, it is considered as a renal failure and in such cases either dialysis or kidney transplants are the only available options for the patients. Each year, close to 2, 00,000 people need kidney transplantation in India but only around 7,000 kidney transplants are done each year due to the lack of awareness about kidney donation.”

Dr. Vijay Kumar Sinha, Consultant, Nephrology, Jaypee Hospital said, “Performing more than 200 kidney transplants in just 29 months is a record in itself. All this is possible due to the great team support and cutting-edge technology that Jaypee Hospital has.

“Current studies suggest that diabetes, nephritis, blood pressure, stones and hypertension contribute to an increased risk of developing renal dysfunction. If and when the kidney disease reaches an untreatable stage, the patient should go for a kidney transplant to avoid lifelong dialysis, as the amount spent for a year on dialysis is the same in which a patient can get a kidney transplant,” Dr. Sinha further added.

Patients have visited Jaypee Hospital for their kidney transplants not only from India but internationally as well. Cambodia, Mongolia, Pakistan, Iraq, Nigeria, Kyrgyzstan are few of the countries from where patients have undergone kidney transplants in huge number.
