“Walkathon witnessed participation from more than 600 people across ages, a successful attempt to create awareness on “Bone Health”

New Delhi, February 18,2018:

Fortis Hospital, Shalimar Bagh organized a walkathon early morning today to create awareness on healthy knees for senior citizens. The 1.5 km walk was a round trip, flagged off from Metro Walk, Rohini and witnessed participation from over 600 participants who came together for a common cause – to spread awareness on “Healthy Knees for All”. The walk was led by Dr. (Prof.) Amite Pankaj Aggarwal, Additional Director, Orthopedics and Joint Replacement, Fortis Hospital, Shalimar Bagh and other prominent orthopedicians.

The walkathon served as an inspiration to those senior citizens who have been suffering from prolonged knee problems and are not confident to get back on their feet, thus struggling in their daily lives. The event also saw participation from senior citizens who have undergone “Fast Track” Knee Replacement giving encouragement to those participants who face advanced knee joint problems.  “Fast-Track” is a multi-disciplinary approach in total knee replacement surgery, where patients are mobilized as quickly as possible to obtain faster and better recovery.

The walkathon was followed by an interactive session where patients shared their journey of successful recovery after being treated under the “Fast-Track” approach.

Mrs. Sushila Jain (60) participated in the walkathon; Sushila had been suffering from severe disability. Sharing her experience Mrs. Jain said “I was bed-ridden for four months and totally disheartened. I had a case history of high BP, sugar and was overweight hence scared to go ahead with a surgery. However Dr. Aggarwal convinced me that I would be back on my feet like before post my surgery. I am leading a hassle free life today, thanks to Dr Aggarwal for the corrective surgery and guided rehabilitation process”

Dr.Amite Pankaj said “This kind of an activity encourages the citizens to lead an active life and to keep their joints active and fit. In addition, it also raises awareness amongst people regarding the technological advancement in joint replacement surgery which have made the entire process pain free leading to a faster recovery.  Geriatric patients suffering from advanced knee arthritis conditions hesitate in undergoing total knee replacement surgery as they are afraid of prolonged immobilization and severe post-operative pain. Meeting the operated patients gives an inspiration to those suffering from advanced knee pain and motivates them to get back on their feet.”
