3. A study by scientists from the State University of New York has found that more than 90% of bottled water worldwide, including India, contains tiny pieces of plastic.

4. Polypropylene, used to make plastic bottle caps, was the most common polymeric material (54%) found in the samples while nylon was the second most abundant (16%).

5. Topical antibiotics can be used in the treatment of mild, moderate or severe acne, and should not be used as monotherapy in an effort to reduce resistance development (ie, use topical antibiotics only when combined with topical BP and/or a topical retinoid). Orally administered antibiotics are recommended for moderate-severe inflammatory acne. Similarly, oral antibiotics are not recommended as monotherapy and are best used concomitantly with topical BP or a topical retinoid product, or both.

6. The Central Drug Standards Control Organization (CDSCO) is contemplating cancelling licenses of Wockhardt Ltd, Mascot Health Series Pvt. Ltd and Ambic Aayurchem Ltd for allegedly selling drugs without conducting safety trials, thereby risking the lives of patients.

7. Mascot health and Wockhardt are being probed for launching and marketing an anti fungal Fixed Dose combination (FDC) -Itraconazole 100 mg and Terbinafine 250 mg tablets in the market without conducting any safety trials.

8. FDC-Teneligptin Hydrobromide Hydrate 20 mg+Metformin Hcl 500 mg +Pioglitazone Hydrochloride 15 mg. Globally this combination is not approved. [Livemint]

What are “Diseases of the Heart”: The National Center for Health Statistics USA tabulated mortality of “Diseases of the Heart.” The term is commonly used in its statistical publications and its compilation of the leading causes of death. This category groups diseases containing words referring to the “heart” and includes: Acute Rheumatic Fever/Chronic Rheumatic Heart Diseases; Hypertensive Heart Disease and Hypertensive Heart and Renal Disease; Coronary Heart Disease and Other Heart Diseases  – includes heart failure. “Diseases of the Heart” is not equivalent to “Total Cardiovascular Disease,” which the American Heart Association prefers to use to describe the leading causes of death. “Diseases of the Heart” represents about three-fourths of “Total Cardiovascular Disease” mortality.

17. Januzzi : Diabetes increases the risk for heart failure, and when a person has heart failure and they have diabetes, they do worse.

18. The prevalence of obesity in US adults was 19.4% in 1997 and increased steadily to 31.4% in 2017. Likewise, the prevalence of diagnosed diabetes went from 5.1% in 1997 to 9.5% in 2017.

19. Trending in the opposite direction, the number of current adult cigarette smokers, defined as those who had smoked more than 100 cigarettes in their lifetime and now smoke every day or some days, fell from 24.7% to 14.1%.

20. ‘One size of diet does not fit all’ was the core message from experts who have penned the 2018 Diabetes UK evidence-based nutrition guidelines for the prevention and management of diabetes, at the Diabetes UK Professional Conference 2018.
