New Delhi, April 20, 2018: Using MRI, doctors have found sedentary behavior is a significant predictor of medial temporal lobe thinning. The atrophy and anti-neuroplastic processes associated with cognitive decline are thought to begin in the medial temporal lobe. The hippocampal formation and its surrounding structures, specifically, are essential for memory function (Prabha Siddarth at Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior at the University of California)

The first known epidemic of drug-resistant typhoid is spreading in Pakistan. The typhoid superbug is resistant to five types of antibiotics

The New York Times reported.

ICMR surveillance data from January 2017 to December 2017 has shown that Acinetobacter baumannii is resistant to all the antibiotics except to colistin. Cephalosporins like cefepime and ceftazidime shows higher resistance rates across all the specimens followed by amikacin, piperacillin-tazobactam and levofloxacin. Among carbapenems, imipenem shows increased resistance of >85% whereas meropenem shows 80%. This scenario clearly indicates that monotherapy with carbapenems are not considered to be the choice of treatment for A. baumannii infections. For Pseudomonas aeruginosa, overall, 30% resistance is seen for the anti-pseudomonal agents, with highest rates of resistance in isolates from CSF and urine.

Most multidrug-resistant A. baumannii and P. aeruginosa retain susceptibility for the polymyxins. Therefore, the polymyxins (colistin and polymyxin B) are usually the cornerstones for therapy. Combination therapy is also advised when polymyxins are used to treat multidrug-resistant A. baumannii and P. aeruginosa.

Allopurinol-associated cutaneous adverse reactions severe enough to require hospitalization occurred three to six times as often in Asians, blacks, and Native Hawaiians/Pacific Islanders than in whites or Hispanics, and up to 12 times as often in members of the high-risk groups who were also female and older than 60 years, researchers report in an article published online April 13 in the Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases.
