Ban trans-fats in restaurants: HCFI

Heart Care Foundation of India has urged banning of trans fats in the restaurants.

Trans fats have been a staple in the tastiest junk foods for more than 100 years. But Monday marked the end of the once-prevalent ingredient following the Food and Drug Administration’s ban of artificial trans fats from American restaurants and grocery store food items. The FDA deemed trans fats unsafe in 2015, and gave companies until June 18, 2018 to eliminate the ingredient.

The FDA ban applies to artificial trans fats, which are made chemically by adding hydrogen to vegetable oil. (partially hydrogenated oil is also trans- fat.). Trans fat increases the shelf life of packaged foods, and restaurants like to use it as oil for deep frying because it doesn’t need to be changed as often as other oils.

Trans fats increases the bad cholesterol and reduces the levels of good cholesterol in the blood.

New ICD Update

WHO has released the 11th edition of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11) after more than 10 years in the making. ICD-11 is fully electronic, making it easier to use and less prone to errors. It contains 55,000 codes vs 14,400 in ICD-10.

ICD-11 will come into effect on January 1, 2022. It includes one chapter on traditional medicine, which has never been classified in this system.

Long germ PPI safe

“Thus, our findings do not support previous assumptions that long–term proton pump inhibitor use would be associated with an increased risk of hip fractures.” (Aliment Pharmacol Ther. 2018;47(8):1135-1142)

Mosquitos why they are selective in their bite

A study, conducted by researchers at Virginia Tech, confirmed that mosquitoes remember the taste and smell of human blood and often pick on individuals whose blood is “sweeter” to them.

They also remember the defensive measures taken against them. The brain chemical dopamine plays a role in a mosquito learning which hosts to attack and which to avoid.

Mosquitoes learn which individuals to attack and which to leave alone with aversive learning.  The full study was published Feb. 5, 2018 in the journal Current Biology.

Smoking

Smoking has hit an all-time low in the US, government figures show.  Just 13.9 percent of US adults smoked in 2017, down from about 15.5 percent the year before, according to a report from the CDC. Teens are smoking less than ever before as well, with rates down to just nine percent among high school students.

Exercise for the elderly

25% of your muscle mass is gone by age 70 — a major reason people lose their independence — and most people who break a hip never fully regain their independence.
