Delhi/NCR, December 27, 2018:

‘Dilli Ki Sardi’ has a character of its own. People often fondly reminisce about the chilly days interspersed with the sunny ones, with Delhi looking more alive and welcoming than ever. Prone to seasonal changes, winter certainly brings out the best of Delhi; but is extremely fickle and needs to be protected against.

Lack of sunshine in the winter can affect your bone health with  low levels of vitamin D can impact the bone health, This winter, Dr. Vivek Dahiya, Additional Director, Fortis Escorts Hospital, Okhla, New Delhi provides us with a few tips and precautions to enjoy the weather while maintaining our bone health:

  1. Layered clothing:Keep the body protected from cold weather by using thick garments and multiple layers of warm clothing. This is useful because the air trapped between various layers acts an insulator and prevents the body from losing heat.
  1. Exercise:Exercising outdoors during winter has many benefits as the body burns more calories in the cold. People who suffer from joint pain can go for a walk outside and do simple stretching exercises indoors. Exercise not only loosens up the joints but also strengthens the bones and muscles.
  1. Adequate hydration:Water eases away the pain from the joints and muscles. By staying hydrated, the cartilages which are present at the joints are put to ease, allowing for quick and painless movement.
  1. Regular consumption of Vitamin D:Due to the harsh weather people have a tendency to stay indoors and exposure to the sun is severely diminished. Therefore the vitamin D intake (taken from the sun), which boosts our metabolism, immunity and spine health is significantly lowered. Hence it is essential to supplement it during winter months with dairy products, egg yolk, fish oil and Omega – 3. The recommended dose of vitamin D supplements are 400 IU daily for children and 600-800 IU daily for adults.

Dr. Dahiya, talks about pollution in winters and effective steps to combat it:

The weather conditions are unfavourable and do not allow for pollutants to disburse easily. As a result they remain trapped in the lower levels of the atmosphere causing a variety of health related issues. From cough to cold to slightly more serious respiratory ailments, pollution levels in Delhi/NCR are oscillating between severe and hazardous.

Some precautionary measures which can be taken to handle the high levels of pollution include:

  1. Avoiding all outdoor activities
  2. Keeping the windows of the household closed
  3. Avoiding  burning of wood, candles and incense
  4. Using masks while travelling outdoors

To battle the cold winter winds it is imperative to maintain the body temperature. Therefore the foods that are consumed should have a high ‘thermic effect’. This will boost our metabolism, keep us active and ensure that we are warm throughout the day. Such foods include high protein foods (poultry, fish, pork and ham) and complex carbohydrates (wholegrain products, green and coloured vegetables etc).
