Kolkata/Chandigarh, April 24, 2024:
BM Birla Heart Hospital organized a session on knowledge sharing and best practices workshop on Intravascular Ultrasound (IVUS) by a renowned medical practitioner of international fame to provide improved patient outcomes through new technologies and deliver precise and accurate treatment to patients suffering from complex coronary diseases.
The workshop was conducted by Dr Sanjog Kalra, the esteemed Brompton Funds Professor of Interventional Cardiology and renowned Cardiac Critical Care Physician from Peter Munk Cardiac Centre, Toronto General Hospital. Dr. Kalra, a distinguished Interventional Cardiologist specializing in complex, high-risk coronary revascularization, chronic total occlusions, and mechanical circulatory support, brought his expertise to the forefront during an IVUS guided complex PTCA workshop. Throughout the workshop, Dr. Kalra demonstrated his unparalleled skill and knowledge, conducting a total of 5 intricate cases alongside our esteemed in-house interventional cardiologists.
Speaking at the occasion, Dr Kalra said, “Through IVUS, we want to give the best outcomes to our patients. IVUS is used a lot for complex coronary diseases like those having bifurcation lesions, 100% blocked arteries, etc. Across the world, IVUS is used widely for such patients as it provides evidence backed by data and helps in better diagnosis and treatment.”
IVUS is a new medical imaging technique that uses a specially designed catheter with an ultrasound transducer attached to its tip to provide high-resolution images of coronary arteries. As a result of this, IVUS offers critical insights which traditional angiography cannot provide from assessing the severity of coronary artery disease to guiding percutaneous coronary interventions, leading to improved patient outcomes and reduction of risk of complications.
Dr Anil Mishra, Consultant – Interventional Cardiology, BM Birla Heart Hospital, said, “Fortunately at BM Birla, we have been using this technique. The main idea behind organizing this knowledge sharing session is that every day, expertise keeps growing and new developments take place. To keep abreast of the latest technologies and offer the best medical care to our patients, we organized this session.”
According to Dr Dhiman Kahali, Consultant – Interventional Cardiology, BM Birla Heart Hospital, IVUS is more patient friendly and its greatest USP is that it provides data backed by evidence and provides more information than a complex Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI) procedure.
Supratik De Sarkar, Unit Head, BM Birla Heart Hospital, said, “We had acquired this system last year as we wanted to focus more on evidence-based practices and improve the quality of clinical outcomes. We have a large number of cases in complex coronary diseases coming in every year and this system has helped a lot in delivering best results to the patients.
The collaborative environment fostered by Dr. Kalra and the hospital’s cardiologists ensured a dynamic and enriching learning experience for all those involved. B M Birla Heart Hospital has been a pioneer in using the latest technologies to provide improved patient outcomes. In continuation with this effort, the hospital has adopted the IVUS technology to ensure quality cardiac care and highest standards of patient satisfaction for those suffering from complex cardiac ailments.
