Chennai/Chandigarh, November 10, 2023:

The theme for World Diabetes Day this year is ‘Access to Diabetes Care,’ aimed at increasing understanding of diabetes as a public health concern and the actions that must be taken, both individually and collectively. In line with amplifying this theme and enhancing awareness of the rising burden of diabetes, Indus Health Plus , a pioneer in preventive healthcare, has observed trends related to blood sugar levels based on the healthcare check-ups conducted.

The study examined health check-ups conducted from April 2021 to March 2023, revealing that 26% of people under 40 years of age have borderline or prediabetic range blood sugar levels, indicating levels between 100 to 125 mg/dl.

Commenting on the health check-up data, Amol Naikawadi, Joint Managing Director & Preventive Healthcare Specialist at Indus Health Plus, stated, “India is regarded as the global center for diabetes, and to combat this, Indus Health Plus has always been at the forefront for running awareness programs emphasizing the value of early detection and prompt treatment of the condition. A sedentary lifestyle increases the risk of diabetes, which is a lifestyle condition. Individuals who already have diabetes can reverse the condition by adopting preventative measures such as a healthy lifestyle, diet management, and lifestyle modifications.

Those at higher risk, including those who are obese, have a strong family history, or lead sedentary lives, should receive counselling regarding the significance of routinely monitoring blood sugar levels and the necessary preventive measures to avoid the condition’s onset due to lifestyle triggers. In addition, genetic testing is essential for identifying individuals in the population who are at high risk.”

Based on the study, the following key findings were identified:

Sample Size: 25,000

  • Abnormal HbA1c levels were highest in the age group of 60 years and above (85%) compared to 20% in the age group less than 40 years.
  • Among individuals with abnormal BMI (overweight and obese), 35% showed abnormal fasting blood sugar levels.
  • Menopause was identified as a significant factor affecting females’ blood sugar levels and the risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes.

According to the Indus Plus Data, 26% of people under the age of 40 were found to have borderline fasting blood sugar levels. This can be attributed to high stress levels, faulty dietary habits, lack of exercise, and abnormal sleep patterns.
