New Delhi, March 27, 2023:

Wakefit.co, one of India’s largest D2C sleep and home solutions providers, released the 6th edition of its Great Indian Sleep Scorecard (GISS) 2023. This year’s report brings interesting revelations about how people in the national capital and Gurugram have been sleeping. New Delhi and Gurugram saw almost 30% people sleeping in places other than their beds. New Delhi and Gurugram alike are plagued with worrisome thoughts about their future, keeping 32% of the cities’ population awake at night. Further findings from Delhi NCR have been elucidated below.

Late nights and early mornings

77% of Gurugram and 64% of New Delhi went to bed after 11 p.m., respectively, indicating that a large part of both cities have not been paying attention to the ideal sleep time. Surprisingly, even though the majority of the population decided to go to bed late at night, 29% of New Delhi and 22% of Gurugram woke up during the 7–8 a.m. window.

Night owls tire in the morning

New Delhi and Gurugram’s late nights have been affecting their productivity with an average of 63% of residents from both cities complaining that they feel sleepy during work hours. Social media seems to be one of the key causes behind late nights as 34% of both the cities were up late at night doomscrolling, while 88% reported that they use phones before bedtime. The fear of insomnia was also a key cause for disturbed sleep and late nights with an average of 31% residents from both cities believing they have insomnia.

Marching towards better sleep hygiene

45% of New Delhi and Gurugram complained that their bedroom environment has been affecting their sleep. Despite sleepless nights, there is a silver lining with 38% of people stating that a consistent sleep routine will help them improve their quality of sleep. Delhiites showcased a 28% increase since 2022 in stating that a better mattress will improve their quality of sleep. Thus, people in Gurugram and New Delhi have started taking the first step towards reclaiming their sleep.

The Great Indian Sleep Scorecard is an ongoing survey and the 2023 edition received 10,000+ responses, recorded from March 2022 to February 2023. It covers respondents in all Indian cities, across age groups, and various demographics. The survey has collected close to 2.1 lakh responses to date for the last six years.
