Mumbai/New Delhi, June 16, 2025:

In a remarkable medical achievement at Apex Superspeciality Hospital, Mumbai, Dr. Hemakshi Mehta, a leading expert in high-risk obstetrics and minimally invasive gynecologic surgery, successfully performed a total laparoscopic hysterectomy (TLH) on a 49-year-old female patient suffering from severe anemia and abnormal uterine bleeding due to multiple fibroids. They removed the uterus weighed a massive 1.25 kg Fibroid —comparable to a 24-week pregnancy.

The patient, a schoolteacher, had silently endured worsening symptoms for years. Dismissing her bleeding as part of perimenopause, she unknowingly lived with more than 10 fibroids, some as large as 7–8 cm. A scan confirmed an enlarged uterus the size of a six-month pregnancy. With school vacations offering a window for treatment, she chose to act—placing her trust in keyhole surgery for a safer and quicker recovery. Laparoscopic hysterectomy for such a large uterus is considered technically complex.

However, Dr. Hemakshi Mehta and her skilled team navigated the challenges through four tiny abdominal incisions, using precision instruments to remove the uterus in pieces via morcellation. The procedure avoided a large 6–8-inch abdominal cut, offering all the advantages of minimally invasive surgery: less pain, reduced blood loss, faster healing, and minimal scarring.

A critical aspect of the surgery was ureterolysis—carefully identifying and safeguarding the ureters, which are at higher risk during laparoscopic procedures involving distorted pelvic anatomy. Dr. Hemakshi Mehta, Consultant in Obstetrics & Gynaecology in Apex Superspeciality Hospital & her team meticulously dissected the retroperitoneal space, ensuring safe removal without complications.

Dr. Hemakshi Mehta further added “It was a completely bloodless procedure, and the patient was up and walking within 24 hours, she was discharged on the third day and is expected to make a full recovery within just a week—significantly faster than the usual three to four-week recovery period associated with traditional open surgery. This case highlights the power of early intervention and the value of minimally invasive expertise,” said Dr. Hemakshi Mehta. “Women often ignore symptoms until it’s too late. Our goal is to change that narrative with safe, advanced surgical care.”
