Mumbai/New Delhi, June 30, 2025 :

Known for its unwavering commitment to excellence in paediatric healthcare, Narayan Health SRCC Children’s Hospital, Mumbai, has once again proven its world-class capabilities by successfully treating a rare and life-threatening case of liver sarcoma in a 15-year-old boy. This extremely rare case—both in terms of age and tumour type—required a complex, multidisciplinary approach and was managed seamlessly by the hospital’s team of specialists.

The patient was brought to the emergency room (ER) in critical condition with massive abdominal distension, severe pain, fever, respiratory distress, and an inability to eat. He had been suffering from these symptoms for over a month and was in a critical state upon arrival.

Initial diagnostic evaluations revealed a massive liver tumour, which was later confirmed to be liver sarcoma—a condition that is exceptionally rare in children of this age. The tumour had ruptured internally, further complicating the situation and requiring urgent medical intervention.

Given the size of the tumour measuring over 20 cm in diameter and the risk of increased ongoing internal bleeding, the medical team immediately performed urgent chemoembolisation, a procedure critical in stopping the tumour’s bleeding and stabilising the patient. "If this hadn’t been done on time, the patient could have succumbed to his condition," said the treating specialists.

Following stabilisation, the child underwent multiple cycles of chemotherapy with great precision. This was followed by a high-risk surgery, which was carried out by SRCC’s expert team, including one of the country’s best paediatric surgeons and liver transplant specialists. Post-surgical care included carefully planned radiation therapy and constant monitoring through a multidisciplinary approach involving oncologists, paediatricians, nutritionists, and physiotherapists.

The entire treatment spanned 10 months, during which the child was admitted intermittently for chemotherapy and other interventions. He was hospitalised for three weeks during the surgical phase and later received support for nutritional care, physiotherapy, and management of transient low blood and platelet counts. Despite the intensive treatment, the patient maintained good nutritional status and did not suffer any significant weight loss, which is rare in cases involving such prolonged cancer
treatment.

This case is medically significant due to its extreme rarity. Paediatric liver sarcomas are one in a million, and the successful management of this case showcases not only the clinical expertise of Narayana Health SRCC Children’s Hospital but also its compassionate, child-centred care model. The patient’s family expressed deep gratitude for the timely intervention, meticulous treatment, and holistic care provided.

Dr Chintan Vyas, Consultant—Paediatric Haematology at Narayana Health SRCC Children’s Hospital, Mumbai “Through successful treatment, we aim to send a strong message to families and the community that even the rarest forms of cancer can be treated effectively. The key is timely intervention and reaching a specialised facility early, which makes all the difference in preventing the cancer from advancing.”

Dr Zubin Pereira, Facility Director of Narayana Health SRCC Children’s Hospital, Mumbai, said, “This case highlights the multidisciplinary expertise of the entire team that worked meticulously to save the patient. The paediatric speciality care we offer at Narayana SRCC Children’s Hospital and our patient-centric response in such a rare case demonstrate our commitment to medical excellence and compassionate care.”
