New Delhi, June 17, 2023:
Nearly 200 crore adults and more than 3.40 crore children and adolescents are overweight or obese, according to the WHO and the same is the leading causes of death worldwide. Non-sugar sweeteners in the food supply have become increasingly prevalent in order to reduce weight and control sugars.
Short term use of non-sugar sweeteners (3 months) did reduce body weight but didn’t improve other indicators of cardiometabolic health, such as glucose or insulin levels. Whereas longer-term (more than 6 months) didn’t appear to affect weight.
Researchers in France connected artificial sweeteners with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. A recent study additionally found that sucralose-6-acetate, a chemical formed when ingesting sucralose, can damage DNA and increase gene activity associated with inflammation and cancer
Long term studies over decades have revealed that higher use of non sugar sweeteners correlated with an increased risk of obesity, type 2 diabetes, several cardiovascular diseases—including stroke—and death from any cause. Also, saccharin was linked with bladder cancer in a small number of case-control studies.
As demand for sugar substitutes continues to rise, WHO warns against using these additives for weight control or managing noncommunicable illnesses as consumption may increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and even death.
According to Dr(Prof) G C Khilnani Chairman, PSRI Institute of Pulmonary, Critical care and Sleep Medicine , “It is proven that low carbohydrate intake is good for health in view of that use of sugars should be minimized by both diabetic and non-diabetic individuals. India has become the CAPITAL OF DIABETES and obesity is also increasing. It is has become a `fashion’ to use non-sugar sweeteners to control blood sugars and minimize calorie intake. It is a routine to be served with tea/coffee with sachet of non-sugar sweeteners. The Guidelines of WHO and a paper in JAMA has clearly revealed that long term use of these non-sugar sweeteners does not lead to better control of diabetes or reduce in body weight. On the contrary, there is higher risk of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancers and death. It is therefore, advisable NOT TO USE these harmful substances in your diet control your urge to take sweets with your `will power’ ”
