Hyderabad/New Delhi, November 27th, 2022:

The Department of GastroenterologyApollo Hospitals, organized a one-day Live Workshop on Advanced Endoscopic Procedures, at Apollo Hospitals, Jubilee Hills. The conference was attended by over 150 Gastroenterologists from across Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, including budding gastroenterologists. The Workshop showcased advanced and novel endoscopic procedures like Spyglass Cholangioscopy and Endoscopic Ultrasound Guided Drainages of dead cells or tissue.  The delegates got hands on training and extensive exposure on these state-of-the-art and cutting-edge techniques.

Traditionally patients with jaundice from bile pipe blockages were subjected to major surgeries to relieve the jaundice but these surgeries are complicated, risky, costly and required prolonged hospital stay. However, with the advent of these minimally invasive advanced endoscopic procedures now we are able to do all the treatments as outpatient effectively with less risks and at a fraction of a cost, says Dr Naveen Polavarapu, Consultant Gastroenterologist and Transplant Hepatologist, Apollo Hospitals, Hyderabad.

Spyglass Cholangioscopy, a small caliber scope, enables the physician to gain a clear vision of the biliary duct system along with the small pancreatic ducts which are otherwise difficult to access. It helps to diagnose abnormalities, obtain biopsy specimens; and perform minimally invasive procedures like guiding for stone therapy and treat biliary and pancreatic diseases more effectively and efficiently. It has a lighted camera, an irrigation system to flush debris, suction to clean out debris, tools such as a laser to break up stones and forceps for pinpoint collection of tissue during biopsies, says Dr D K Raghu, Consultant Gastroenterologist, Apollo Hospitals.

Similarly, patients with Pancreatic problems now we are able to access and drain the collections and remove the dead tissue with these advanced and minimally invasive endoscopic techniques, said Dr Sharath G, Consultant Gastroenterologist, Apollo Hospitals.

These advanced procedures are groundbreaking and globally has changed the treatment options for these complex diseases and majorly avoided complicated surgeries, says Dr K S Soma Sekhar Rao, Consultant Gastroenterologist, Apollo Hospitals.
