All the panellists coherently emphasized that adequate and proper quality of sleep is good for both brain and physical health. In the long run, sleep deprivation might transform into a major issue in terms of well-being and quality of life.
Under the umbrella term of ‘Sleep Hygiene’, all the panellists shared certain dos and don’ts for a healthy and quality sleep – change in sleep timings can be detrimental for quality sleep, don’t take tea or coffee after six in the evening, bright lights too can cut the sleep whereas shaded lights should be preferred as it helps create an ambience for deep sound sleep. Also, dinner should be kept light and there must be a minimum three hours of gap after the same before going to sleep. As against a popular belief it was also said that alcohol too is not a good source of quality sleep.
Dr Dwivedee, in his address said that sleep works an important function for human body. Sleep deprived people often develop high blood pressure, diabetes and other critical illnesses including severe sleeping disorders which eventually adversely affects longevity. He stated that, sleep is more important than exercise. Balanced diet and good sleep are of paramount importance for healthy life.
Sharing his views, Dr Chawla said, that sleep is as important as other things for reactivation, rejuvenation and restoring the function of cells of our body and one should stringently follow “sleep hygiene” as it greatly helps in enhancing efficiency especially for corporate employees who are dealing with lots of work pressure and stress. He further added that one must sleep at least for 6 hours to start day activities energetically and with a healthy mind and body.
Dr Goyal very aptly pointed out that sleep disorders are absolutely and directly linked with several critical illnesses and diseases as it impacts almost all the body organs such as heart and also leads to uncontrolled diabetes and/or blood pressure, heart strokes, and even sometimes it causes road crashes and accidents while driving, etc.
