New Delhi, October 31, 2026:

Most of us know psyllium husk, commonly called isabgol, as the ingredient our grandparents reached for when digestion felt sluggish. But in today’s world of irregular meals, low-fibre diets and long work hours, psyllium husk deserves a wider conversation

Let me ask you something: when was the last time you thought about how much fibre you ate in a day? We count calories, track protein and worry about carbs, but fibre often gets overlooked until digestive discomfort begins.

As a dietitian, I feel we should talk about fibre before it becomes a problem. Our everyday meals may include roti, rice, dal and vegetables, yet our fibre intake depends on our portions, food choices and variety.

ICMR–National Institute of Nutrition guidelines highlight fibre-rich foods such as whole grains, pulses, vegetables and fruits. Around 25–30 g of fibre daily is a useful general reference for many adults, depending on individual needs.

Think about a typical day: bread or poha for breakfast, a refined-grain lunch and perhaps a small serving of vegetables at dinner. We may feel that we have eaten enough, yet our fibre intake can still fall short.

Psyllium husk, obtained from the outer covering of Plantago ovata seeds, is a plant-based source of soluble dietary fibre. Although commonly sold as a supplement, it comes from a plant, making it a familiar, natural source of fibre that can complement our everyday meals. It is a natural source of soluble fibre that supports everyday digestive wellness.

It helps relieve constipation and may ease bloating, supports a healthy gut, helps manage cholesterol levels, and can support weight management by promoting a feeling of fullness. When taken with adequate water psyllium husk absorbs water and forms a gel. This helps retain moisture in the stool, increase stool bulk and make bowel movements easier.

When choosing a product for daily use, its quality matters. Always check the ingredients, product label and source. Organic certification can also help you understand whether a product meets recognized organic farming standards.

I have tried Organic India’s Psyllium Husk, and it has been one of my favorite options so far. I appreciate its plant-based certified organic whole herb fibre content and how easily it fits into my routine. Checking the certifications provided with the product also gave me greater confidence in its organic credentials.

One of the most common questions I get is whether taking isabgol regularly can make the body dependent on it, or what happens if you skip it while travelling. Psyllium husk works by absorbing water and making stools softer and easier to pass. Many people can use it regularly,

Another common question is about the best time to take it. I find that morning or early evening can be convenient, but what matters most is following the product instructions and drinking plenty of water. Always mix psyllium husk with enough liquid, drink it promptly and never swallow it dry. Avoid taking it just before bedtime.

I find psyllium husk easy to include in my daily routine by mixing it with water or diluted buttermilk, Fibre is an important part of our daily diet. Along with psyllium husk, eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, pulses, nuts and seeds. Small, healthy changes in our daily eating habits can help us stay healthy and feel our best.
