Chandigarh, December 09, 2021:

December 9, 2021 marked a red-letter day in the history of Punjabi University, Patiala as the University held its 39th Convocation. The Hon’ble Governor of Punjab and the Chancellor of the University, Shri Banwarilal Purohit, graced the University with his presence while Prof. Gagandeep Kang, Indian microbiologist and virologist and the first Indian woman of Punjabi origin to have been honored as a member of the Royal Society, had been invited as the Chief Guest for the occasion.

Addressing the students, Professor Kang reiterated that as the future of a changing India, they are more than capable of meeting challenges head-on. She also shared with candidates three tenets to help them lead a more productive life: to shun falsehoods, embrace struggles and plan ahead so as to minimise risk. The first tenet to live by is empathy. Professor Kang added that it is while helping others that we learn to fight against the injustices prevalent in society. She encouraged students to challenge the falsehoods advertised as truths because in doing so we choose a career that is more about making a difference than about making money.

The second tenet is about embracing the hardships we incur as we stand up for that which is right. The final tenet, according to Professor Kang, is to prepare and to plan ahead. Though there is no foolproof way to live life, but planning ahead and identifying what is critical can help reduce the risk factor.

Speaking to the candidates, Hon’ble Governor Purohit reminded students of their moral responsibility to contribute productively to the society that has helped them achieve success. Praising the Punjabi University, he reiterated that there are a very few universities who are so dedicated in the task of dissemination of language, literature and culture. This University, which was established for the purpose of propagating the Punjabi language, is doing a commendable job in imparting knowledge in various faculties.

The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Arvind, described students as the ambassadors of Punjabi University. He observed that the values of the University shall remain with them no matter which path they choose to follow. He also reminded candidates to remain connected to their alma mater.

On the first day of the Convocation, seven Chancellor Medals, 689 Medals of Merit and Merit Certificates were awarded. PhD Degrees were given to 213 students who have completed their doctoral degrees in the year 2021.
