“In the wake of Kamala Mills fire tragedy, Bhatia Hospital conducts training for firemen on how to provide first aid to fire victims at the site of the accident.”
Mumbai, February 16, 2018 :
Bhatia Hospital arranged a special workshop for the men who risk their lives to save others in case of a fire situation. The workshop held at the Fire Brigade Head Office in Byculla on January 24 aimed to educate firemen on how to tackle and provide first aid to fire victims at the site of the accident.
The workshop comes in the wake of the December 29tragedy at Mumbaiโs tony Kamala Mills at Lower Parel where a major fire broke out in two high-end restaurants killing 14 people and leaving 16 injured. Moreover, these days, firefighters do a lot more than just fight fires โ from firework accidents and road traffic collisions to responding to incidents of flooding and terrorism, they have to do it all. In such a situation, first aid training is an essential function of their job.
The workshop was conducted by Dr Shailesh Ranade, Consultant, Burns, Plastic & Reconstructive Surgeon at Bhatia Hospital. The training session spanned over several seminal topics that play a vital role during a fire operation. These included:
- Identification of severely injured burns victims with life threatening injuries
- First Aid at the site of the Accident
- Transfer to Health Care Facility
- How a Fireman Can Prevent / Treat himself from burns?
While safety of the civilians is their first priority, sometimes firemen themselves fall victims to the blazing infernos they are trying to douse. Four fire fighters including a former chief fire officer had died on May 9, 2015 while fire fighting a blaze in Kalbadevi.
Dr Rajeev Boudhankar, CEO, Bhatia Hospital, said โFirst aid is one of the most important parts of a firefighterโs job. It is essential to understand the tenets of first aid so that more number of lives can be saved. We had a very informative session with a lot of pro-active participation by our brave firemen. We hope to conduct more such sessions with them on a regular basis.โ
In our country, firemen are always known to risk their lives and put the safety of others during a fire situation. Although our firemen are trained in first aid, this kind of practical training by doctors from a renowned hospital like Bhatia that has handled several fire tragedy cases is always useful. We look forward to more such sessions.
