Mumbai/New Delhi, March 25, 2025:
In a remarkable medical achievement, a 22-year-old woman from Maharashtra, suffering from a severe spinal deformity known as kyphoscoliosis—commonly referred to as ‘Gubad deformity’—underwent a successful corrective surgery, restoring her mobility and confidence.
The case came to light during a routine peripheral clinical camp organized by Impact India Foundation in Latur, where Dr. Rajesh Panchal, a renowned Consultant Orthopaedic & Trauma Surgeon from Apex Group of Hospitals, met the young woman who had been seeking treatment for years without success. Kyphoscoliosis is a complex spinal condition characterized by an abnormal curvature in both the sagittal and coronal planes, sometimes accompanied by a rotational deformity. In adults, scoliosis is diagnosed when the lateral spinal deviation exceeds 10 degrees in the coronal plane, measured using the Cobb angle. Despite visiting multiple healthcare facilities, the patient and her family had lost hope due to the lack of clear guidance and treatment options.
Commenting on this exceptional case, Dr. Rajesh Panchal stated, “Fate had different plans for her. She placed her trust in me, and with the support of my dedicated team, we embarked on a journey to restore her life.” The patient traveled to Mumbai, where she underwent a complex corrective spine surgery at Apex Superspeciality Hospital, Borivali. The intricate procedure, which lasted between 8 to 10 hours, was performed by a distinguished team, including Dr. Amit Jain, Senior Spine Surgeon (Orthospine Clinic), and Dr. Akhil Tawari, Spine Surgeon. The operation was further supported by skilled anesthetists and intraoperative neuromonitoring to ensure patient safety.
“The surgery was intense and demanding, but witnessing the final transformation made all the effort worthwhile,” said Dr. Panchal. “The patient’s family was overjoyed. A few months post-surgery, she not only regained her confidence but also got married and later gave birth to a healthy baby. She continues to share her gratitude, which is a reward beyond any medical degree.”
This successful surgery underscores the expertise and commitment of Apex Superspeciality Hospital in providing advanced orthopedic care. It also highlights the impact of outreach initiatives like the Impact India Foundation’s clinical camps, which help bridge the gap between medical care and underserved communities.
