New Delhi,May 22,2017 : Its good to watch what we are eating but what we do after meal is even more crucial. Some sleep, a few like having luke-warm water and others consider eating fruits a healthy practice, some like to go for a puff immediately, others like to have a cup of tea thinking it helps in digestion.

Many of these habits do more harm than good :

Sleeping  : Be it a nap after lunch or sleeping after dinner, this is the most common mistake that all make. You may get acid reflux which can lead to discomfort. Try to have your dinner before 8 and give your body time to digest food. This will strengthen your metabolism and make your appetite stronger.

Smoking: It is said that smoking after a meal is equivalent to smoking 10 cigarettes. No matter how true or false this is, smoking is harmful to your body and you should not smoke anyhow. Cigarettes contain carcinogens, which cause cancer.

Taking a shower : Our digestion process requires a lot of energy and good blood flow towards the stomach. Taking shower right after a meal may hamper this process as it reduces blood flow and body temperature. Wait for at least 45 minutes after your meal and then take a shower.

Eating Fruits : Considered as the healthiest foods, eating fruits right after a meal is not a good idea. The best time to eat fruits is empty stomach, that too certain type of fruits. Fruits require different enzymes for digestion. Eating fruits right after a meal may not digest easily and can cause indigestion, heartburn and other problems.

Having Tea: The tannic acid in the tea impacts protein and iron content of your meal. This prevents absorption of essential nutrients of food which are required by our body, making it difficult to digest. Avoid tea one hour before and after meals.

Go for a mild walk after your meal. Even a 15-minute walk can help in proper digestion of food. Remember, your diet and dietary habits play a vital role in your overall well being.
