“Importance of quality, safety and efficacy of herbal drugs used in traditional medicine highlighted”
New Delhi, August 20, 2025 :
In collaboration with the World Health Organization-South-East Asia Regional Office (WHO-SEARO), the Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences (CCRAS) under the Ministry of Ayush, through its RRAP-Central Ayurveda Research Institute (RRAP-CARI) organized a 4-day “Regional Workshop on WHO Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) for Herbal Medicines” in Mumbai on 19-22 August 2025.
Prof. Rabinarayan Acharya, Director General, CCRAS, Dr. Pavan Godatwar, Technical Officer, WHO (SEARO) and Dr. C.K. Katiyar, Former Director, Emami (India), inaugurated the workshop in the presence of officials from CCRAS, WHO, PCIM&H and RRAP-CARI.
Dr. Catharina Boehme, Officer in Charge, WHO-SEARO addressed the gathering through a video message where she highlighted the importance of quality, safety and efficacy of herbal drugs used in traditional medicine. Dr. R. Govind Reddy, InCharge, RRAP-CARI, Mumbai welcomed all the delegates and explained the planning of the workshop.
As many as 19 international delegates from South East Asian countries including Bhutan, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Nepal and India are participating in the workshop. The 4-day workshop is planned to include diverse technical sessions with experts in GMP/ GLP delivering lectures for six modules. The expert panel includes eminent scientists and officials including Dr. Sudipt Dey, Former Dy. DC, CDSCO, Govt. of India and Dr. Satyabrata Maiti, Former Director, ICMR, Govt. of India. Exposure visits at two WHO-GMP certified Pharmaceutical Units in Herbal Medicines is also planned at Emami at Silvassa, Daman and Zandu FHC farms at Amabch, Gujrat.
In the inaugural address, Dr. Pavan Godatwar, Technical Officer, WHO informed that this workshop was planned to showcase the Indian efforts to produce best quality and efficacious herbal drugs in GMP manufacturing units among South East region countries. Dr. C.K. Katiyar, Former Director, Emami (India) emphasized the importance of training of technical experts in industrial development in herbal medicines. Prof. Rabinarayan Acharya explained the need and significance of research for Ayurvedic Medicines in India. Dr. Raman Singh, Director, PCIM&H informed participants about the recent developments in the sector and the recently concluded WHO-IRCH workshops hosted by PCIM&H, Ministry of Ayush, Government of India.
The workshop compliments the ongoing efforts of the Ministry of Ayush towards quality drug development in Ayush.
