New Delhi, July 31, 2025:

In a world that is changing rapidly—climate, health, communities—some things remain timeless. And one of them is the simple, powerful act of breastfeeding. It is more than just feeding a baby. It is life, love, comfort, and connection. As we approach World Breastfeeding Week 2025, the world is called to recognize breastfeeding, not only as a deeply personal act between mother and child but also as a global act of environmental care and community strength.

This year’s theme, “environment and climate change”, brings new meaning to the beauty of breastfeeding.  Unlike formula feeding, which depends on manufacturing, packaging, transportation, and waste disposal, breastfeeding is entirely natural and sustainable. It leaves no carbon footprint. It needs no plastic bottles, no factory processing, and no shipping. It is an act of love that nourishes both baby and planet.

Breastfeeding is not always easy, and therefore there is no need for a mother to walk alone in this journey. Because WBW2025 also highlights the “Warm Chain of Support” , a network of people and systems working together to create a breastfeeding-friendly world at every level, which includes national, healthcare, workplace, and community. And each and every link in this chain matters.

For the mother sitting in a hospital bed, unsure if she’s doing it right, the support of a kind nurse or lactation consultant can make all the difference. For the woman returning to work, access to a private, safe space to pump and flexible policies mean she can continue to feed her baby with confidence. For the new mom in a village or city neighbourhood, community health workers, friends, and family offer the encouragement she needs to keep going. And at the highest levels, governments and policymakers must create laws and systems that protect and promote breastfeeding.

When these links connect, a powerful support system forms around every breastfeeding mother. That’s the Warm Chain—a circle of care and strength that uplifts both mothers and their babies.

To the mothers: your journey matters. Whether your breastfeeding story is full of ease or filled with challenges, know that every drop, every cuddle, every late-night feed is a gift. In your arms, your baby finds food but also safety, peace, and love. You are not just raising a child—you are nourishing the future, body and soul.

To the world: let us protect this sacred bond. Let us work together—healthcare providers, families, employers, leaders, and neighbours—to create an environment where every mother feels supported and every baby has the chance to thrive.

Breastfeeding is not only the first food—it is the first act of environmental care, the first thread in a lifelong bond, and the beginning of a more compassionate, sustainable world.

WBW2025 reminds us: when we support breastfeeding, we nurture both life and the Earth.  Together, we can build a healthier, greener future—one baby, one mother, one warm chain at a time.
