Hyderabad, September 23, 2022:

Apollo Health City, Hyderabad, has pioneered the state-of-the-art Robot-assisted Angioplasty system in the combined Telugu states of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, by launching this next generation cardiac care service at its hospital at Jubilee Hills, today. Robot assisted interventional procedures bring a paradigm shift in interventional cardiology in this part of the country by laying special thrust on precision care and speedy recovery, which immensely benefits the patient, while easing the occasional human errors.

Apollo Health City, Hyderabad, is acclaimed for over three decades for its breakthrough procedures. Several of these innovations published in reputed national and international journals, were acknowledged and commended by the medical fraternity world over. Having excelled in the field of coronary interventions with a significant volume of CHIP interventions, the Hospital is foraying into robot-assisted angioplasty procedure, for the first time in the states of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.

“Robotic assisted coronary intervention carries a lot of potential as it promises a level of precision of stent placement which only high experienced cardiologists are capable of and it also reduces radiation exposure for both patient and clinician.   I am happy to share that this is yet another step forward in terms of patient-centric medical innovation” says Dr. Sangita Reddy, Joint Managing Director, Apollo Hospitals Group.

Coronary angioplasty is a procedure performed to clear blocks in the arteries of the heart and restore blood flow. With the introduction of robotics in the field, this intervention will now be performed using a set of joysticks and a touchscreen, that serves as an extension to the cardiologist’s hands. This enables the expert cardiologists to have incredible technical benefits like better procedural control, more accurate lesion length calculations, enhanced visualisation, precision in stent placement and reductions in radiation exposure.

Robot-assisted angioplasty represents the dawn of a new era in interventional cardiology. This novel treatment procedure paves the way for greater precision in clearing the blocks and placing the stents, thus enhancing the already stupendous success rate of Apollo Health City, Hyderabad.

Robot-assisted angioplasty enables standardisation of the angioplasty procedure besides bringing greater precision and reduced exposure to radiation during the procedure. All this means shorter procedure time, less exposure to radiation, better outcomes, greater comfort, speedy recovery and lesser duration of hospital stay for patients. Till date we have performed 15 robotic assisted angioplasties successfully out of which 1 left main stenting, 1 venous graft angioplasty and 5 double vessel angioplasties without any complications, says Dr P.C. Rath, Senior Consultant and Director, Interventional Cardiology, Apollo Hospitals, Jubilee Hills. This robotic procedure  overall enables best angioplasty and stenting results, with great accuracy, leading to better patient outcomes.

This procedure can be done on 90% of the patients, but for patients with total block and having complex disease this may not be advisable right now, as the technology evolves even those patients may be eligible. In this, 90% of the procedure is done by robot.

Dr. A. Sreenivas Kumar, Senior Consultant and Director, Interventional Cardiology, Apollo Hospitals, Jubilee Hills; said, at Apollo Hospitals we are initiating a new era in cardiac care in the Telugu states with the introduction of Robot-assisted Angioplasty system. We have been doing the conventional procedure of balloon angioplasty and stenting manually for over a decade, but only those cardiologists with enormous experience could perform the procedure and place the stent with precision.

Any variation in the placement of the stent, even in millimetres can lead to complications. Robot procedure can ensure that precision and ensure better patient outcomes. In future there are possibilities of the procedure being performed on patients in remote areas with the help of robots by Doctor operating the robot from their hospital, research is being still done on this. The robotic assisted angioplasty is both patient and doctor friendly.
