New Delhi, May 31, 2023:Initiated by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 1987, this significant day aims to highlight the worldwide tobacco epidemic and encourage governments, organizations, and individuals to take collective action towards a tobacco-free future.
The Global Tobacco Epidemic:
Tobacco use remains one of the leading causes of preventable deaths globally, causing millions of deaths each year and posing serious health risks to both smokers and non-smokers. About 86% use Tobacco for smoking and 14% use in smokeless form. Tobacco contains hundreds of chemical agents which include potent carcinogens like nitrosamines, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, hydrogen cyanide and many others.
According to the WHO, tobacco kills more than 8 million people annually, with approximately 7 million deaths attributed to direct tobacco use and over 1 million resulting from exposure to secondhand smoke. The toll on public health is alarming, encompassing various forms of cancer, respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, and other chronic conditions.
World No Tobacco Day serves as a platform to address several critical objectives:
- Raising Awareness: The campaign aims to educate the public about the dangers of tobacco use, including its addictive nature and the associated health risks. This includes disseminating information about the harmful chemicals present in tobacco products and the detrimental effects they have on individuals, families, and communities.
- Promoting Effective Policies: World No Tobacco Day urges governments to implement and strengthen evidence-based policies to reduce tobacco consumption. This involves advocating for comprehensive tobacco control measures, such as increased taxation, restrictions on advertising and promotion, graphic health warnings, and smoke-free environments.
- Supporting Cessation Efforts: The day encourages smokers to quit and assists them in their journey towards a smoke-free life. Tobacco cessation programs, access to affordable medications, counselling services, and support networks are emphasized to help individuals overcome nicotine addiction and improve their overall well-being.
- Engaging Youth: World No Tobacco Day underscores the significance of preventing tobacco initiation among young people. It emphasizes the need for educational programs and campaigns targeting adolescents and discouraging tobacco experimentation and use. By safeguarding the health of future generations, it lays the foundation for a tobacco-free society.
Mobilizing Global Action:
World No Tobacco Day sparks a range of activities and initiatives worldwide, aiming to foster global cooperation in the fight against tobacco. These include:
- Awareness Campaigns: Health organizations, educational institutions, and non-governmental organizations run awareness campaigns to educate individuals about the dangers of tobacco, utilizing various mediums such as social media, public service announcements, and community events.
- Policy Advocacy: Governments are urged to strengthen their tobacco control measures, aligning with the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC). This includes implementing stricter regulations on tobacco advertising, promotion, and sponsorship, as well as enacting smoke-free legislation.
- Community Support: Smoking cessation programs and resources are made available to support individuals in their efforts to quit smoking. These may involve helplines, counseling services, nicotine replacement therapies, and awareness-raising events centered around tobacco cessation.
- International Collaboration: Governments, health organizations, and international bodies collaborate to share best practices, research findings, and strategies for tobacco control. This fosters a global movement against tobacco, encouraging cross-border cooperation and knowledge exchange.
World No Tobacco Day serves as a crucial reminder of the ongoing battle against tobacco and its devastating impact on public health. By raising awareness, advocating for effective policies, supporting cessation efforts, and engaging youth, this global campaign strives to create a world free from the harms of tobacco. As individuals, we can contribute by spreading awareness, supporting tobacco control initiatives, and empowering others to live healthier lives, free from tobacco addiction.
