As per ICMR Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance Network January 2017-December 2017 the “other worrisome finding is the steadily increasing reports of linezolid resistance” in Staph cases.

Public Health

A British man with a severe case of gonorrhoea has finally been cured of his drug-resistant sexually transmitted infection using ertapenem. As of September 2017, before the above-mentioned cases in Australia and UK, the recommended treatment regimen from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is the dual therapy consisting of ceftriaxone and azithromycin.

US FDA expanded its warning about an E. coli outbreak found in romaine lettuce. All romaine — not just the chopped forms found in salad mixes — can be contaminated and washing the romaine won’t help.

ICMR after formulating guidelines for stem cell research and therapy last year, has now initiated a process to lay down norms for cord blood banking. Companies offer the facility for a fee ranging from Rs 30,000-Rs 1.5 lakh claim it can be used to treat conditions ranging from thalassaemia to aggressive forms of cancer, even though there is not enough scientific evidence to prove that. Stem cell transplantation for treatment is limited to hereditary or genetic conditions, specifically blood disorders. But in that case umbilical cord blood cannot be used to save the donor since it will have the same genetic abnormalities.

Ist National Conference on One Health – Anti Microbial Resistance AND 8th National Conference on Scientific Updates on Prevention of Diseases of Public Health Importance (Zoonotic Diseases) is being organised on 6th July 2018 at New Delhi.
